had the diversified geography in the region, it is a land of deserts,
mountains and fertile river basins.
Much of western China is guarded with the Himalaya, Tian and Pamir Ranges.
Western China also has an extended desert region where as Central China
consists of mountainous regions.
People's Republic of China, is located towards the eastern part
of Asian Continent, circumscribed by the Pacific Ocean.
China is the 3rd largest country in the world, next to Russia and Canada.
The region extends up to an area of 9.6 million sq. km, in other words about
one-fifteenth of the world's total landmass comprises of China.
It begins from the conflux of the Heilong and Wusuli rivers in the east to
the Pamirs west of Wuqia County in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the
west about 5,200 kilometers apart; and from the midstream of the Heilong
River north of Mohe in the north to the southernmost island Zengmu'ansha in
the South China Sea about 5,500 kilometers apart.
China has a land border of 22,143.34 km long and is configured by 12
countries-- Korea in the east; Russian in the northeast and the northwest;
Mongolia in the north; India, Pakistan, Bhutan and Nepal in part of the west
and southwest; Burma, Laos and Vietnam in the south.
The coastline extends well over 18,000 km, scrubbed by the waters of the
Bohai, the Huanghai, the East China and the South China seas. The Bohai Sea
is the Inland Sea of China.
China is an alpine country, with 2/3rd of its total land area covered by
mountains, hills and plateaus. Out of the 12 high peaks of the world of more
than 8,000 m, 7 peaks had been crowned in the Republic of China. The Highest
peak in the world, Mount Qomolangma (8,828m) stands on the border between
China and Nepal.
Rivers and Lakes
China has a great number of rivers. The inland river system accounts for 36
per cent of the total land area in China. Some of the important rivers of
China are-- the Yangtze River, Yellow River, Heilongjiang River, Pearl
River, and Huaihe River.
There are 6,536 islands larger than 500 sq.m in the waters of China. The
largest island is Taiwan, with a total area of about 36,000 sq. km, and the
second largest is the Hainan Island. The South China Sea Islands are the
southernmost island group of China.
